Citrus Salts:

Ok I know I have mentioned before that I LOVE sea salt – this is a great way to make a gift out of it. Or even just make this for yourself, it is so easy and so tasty! Plus, CUTENESS! I also really love glass jars. You could use any container for this really, tins, jars, anything that seals tightly. I personally really like glass containers that seal with a cork, like these, from

Anyways, on with this Recipe/DIY:

You will need:

  • coarse sea salt
  • citrus zest – lemon, lime, grapefruit, orange all work well
  • containers that seal, to hold finished product
  • food processor, magic bullet, similar
  • a cookie sheet lined w parchment paper

This is a super-easy thing to make. The quantities are 1 cup of coarse sea salt per 2 tbsp of citrus zest. I use a Magic Bullet, so I make it in small batches. Also its shelf life is about 3 months, so small batches are better unless you are giving away tons of it.

  1. Grate zest off of your citrus fruit. (I like to pick 3 different ones to do when giving a gift, because a little trio of glass bottles tied together with some string or ribbon or put into a gift basket is just so darn cute and perfect!)
  2. Mix 2 tbsp zest with 1 cup salt.
  3. Spread it all out on the pan and lay flat for several hours.
  4. Spoon it into your containers – if some of it has kind of stuck together/hardened, just break it apart with your hands or a spoon.
  5. Label containers with contents and shelf life and whatever other decorations you would like.

These citrus salts are absolutely great on chicken, fish, stir fry, topping for salads, mixed in salad dressings or sauces, I have even sprinkled some lime salt & chilli into hummus! Yum! Gluten Free too WOOHOO!

*Alternative ways to do this: you could follow the same recipe, however add a few tablespoons of Extra Virgin Cold Pressed olive oil, and substitute essential oil(s) for the zest, and viola, you have a delicious and amazing exfoliating, moisturizing body scrub. Also a great gift for someone you love, or for your self.

*Hint – I always make extra when I do these recipes so that I can have some left over for myself. These are also great to make ahead of time, say in November, to have on-hand as little gifts for those you may have forgotten about or didn’t have time to bake/shop for!
